Tips for Beachcombing

Before you start beachcombing, we have a few tips to increase your odds of finding treasures: 

Visit the beach at low tide: This lets you explore more of the shoreline and look for treasures that are usually submerged at high tide.

Head out after a storm: Strong winds and waves stir up all sorts of treasures from the ocean floor, creating the ideal beachcombing conditions. 

Be cautious of what you take: Make sure the shells and other objects don’t have any living creatures inside.

Pet Policy at Surfcrest Resort

We love hosting pets at our Washington Coast resort. All we ask is that you adhere to these guidelines to ensure all our guests have the best resort experience:

-Pay a $45 flat fee per dog per stay. The fee is non-refundable.

-Only dogs are allowed. Please do not bring cats, birds, or other pets. 

-Maximum of 2 dogs per room.

-You are responsible for any damage in the room or the property. Additional charges may be imposed in the event of excess damage or cleaning.

-Dogs are prohibited from the pool area. 

-Dogs must be leashed at all times.

-Dog owners must pick up after their dog.

-Dogs are not to be left unattended in any rooms or cars. 

Things to Do with Your Dog on the Washington Coast

-Explore the 26-acre property of Surfcrest with your dog. Walk the sand dune trails and spend time on the beach together. 

-Take your dog to the Ocean Shores Beach and let them run around the shoreline off-leash. The off-leash section can be found between Taurus Boulevard and Butterclam Street. You can also take your dogs to Seabrook to run around the beach off-leash. 

-Take your dog to Chinook Park in Ocean Shores and play fetch at the off-leash dog park here. 

-Hike the Weatherwax Trail together along the edge of Duck Lake and through scenic coastal forests. 

-Stroll along the dog-friendly hiking trails in Seabrook. 

-Walk through the neighborhood of Seabrook and stop at dog-friendly shops like The Salty Dog. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of water bowls outside the shops where your dog can stop for a drink.

Oyhut Wildlife Recreation Area

Just a few minutes from North Jetty, the Oyhut Wildlife Recreation Area is a prime spot to go birdwatching. This 683-acre recreation area is spread out amongst diverse environments like 

wetlands, tidal flats, and marshes. This is an important site for the western snowy plover, but other species that frequent here include waterfowl and streaked horned lark. 

Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge

This 1,500-acre refuge in Hoquiam is one of the best birdwatching areas in Washington, home to four distinct ecosystems that support diverse species of migratory shorebirds and landbirds. Common species include western sandpipers, dunlin, short-billed and long-billed dowitchers, and semipalmated plover.

Weatherwax Trail

If you are looking for a short, family-friendly hiking trail near Surfcrest Resort, we recommend starting your journey at the Weatherwax Trail in Ocean Shores. Explore the 1.2-mile loop around Duck Lake, taking you through lush forests abundant with plants and wildlife. 

Seabrook

Located north of Surfcrest Resort, Seabrook is another fantastic destination for short scenic hikes nearby. Find several walking trails around the communities, like the short, family-friendly Gnome Trail or the 2.3-mile Fernwood Trail.  

Olympic National Park

Plan a day trip to Olympic National Park for the ultimate hiking adventure. Access the park near Quinault, which is less than an hour from our resort. The most popular hike from this area is the Quinault Rain Forest Trailhead, which winds a half mile through a lush rainforest setting with an old-growth forest, views of Willaby Creek, and waterfalls. Five miles from this trail, you can drive to Merriman Falls and see this incredible waterfall from the road. 

If you are up for a longer drive, the Hoh Rainforest can be accessed two hours from Surfcrest. This is the largest temperate rainforest in the United States and one of the park’s most beautiful areas. Choose from the incredible Hall of Mosses Trail or the Spruce Nature Trail. 

Capitol State Forest

For another exciting day trip destination, we recommend driving to Capitol State Forest near Olympia. With over 150 miles of trails throughout the 110,000-acre forest, there is a trail for every skill level and interest.
